Long Exposure Photography Method

This type of method allows you to catch the worlds atmosphere e.g. water, clouds, waterfalls anything that has a natural moving rhythm, long exposure allows us to capture those smooth flowing images while keeping the sharpness and precision of the objects. Long exposure shots are ideal of landscape, seascape photography and can allow you to also capture light trails which create a beautiful impact cityscapes . Recommended that you use a DLSR camera one that allows longer exposures and never use the flash while undergoing this type of photography as the whole point is to bring out the natural light sources you capture overtime! settings of camera depending on what you are shooting and how much light there is after doing research it seems having the ISO at 100  (keep it very low ) and have the aperture set at around f/8 & f/16 you also want the shutter speed at around 10-15 seconds.

Macro Photography Method

Another camera technique that captured my eye is Macro photography, this type of photography allows you to capture the smallest yet finest detail that the naked eye can not see things like insect detail, petals on flowers, water droplets and raindrops; it allows nature photographers to capture insects in an intimate manner and makes them appear larger than life with the help of a DLSR Camera the lens recommenced for use would have a  focal length of 60mm so a Canon EF-s 60mm f/2.8 Marco USM is one of the lenses that i have researched as I have a Canon you can find lenses of Nikon cameras  also. You can get 100mm focal lengths and a recommend setting for this focal length is you can set the aperture at f/11 or f/12 with a ISO speed of 400.

Influenced by Photographers

Francesco Scavullo– 16/01/1921 to 3/01/2004

He was an American photographer who worked with the arts of fashion, he also worked with major fashion orientated industries such as Vogue and Cosmopolitan a couple of the most famous fashion magazines. I first came across this photographer by watching a biography styled film called Gia (1995) who was one of America’s first major top models and  Scavullo was one f the first photographers to shoot her and help rise her to fame. The film shows the models downward spiral with drugs and erratic temperament leading to the decline of the many prestigious brands Gia once worked with, during this decline Scavullo continued to work with Gia.

After reviewing this i started to look at some of Scavullo’s work and some of the techniques he used to get his flawless images, his work made him to be one of the masters  working with light, Scavullo would even use the lighting from film sets.

Scavullo would help smooth out the light by using white umbrellas and the uses of muslin sheets on the lights to gain a smooth filtered look and disintegrate any unwanted glare from the photos here are a few examples of his work.

16/11/16 Tutorial with Julian

Today I went in to show Julian some of my pictures; This is not my first tutorial however this is the first one that i am recording as I had some valuable feedback. As I have now changed my idea from observation photography I have now moved onto more Marco visuals and nature photography which i have found more interesting than what I assumed it would be; I asked for Julian to give me advice on some books to take out for nighttime photography, I have now taken out some books and currently researching them. I have been told to look up more photographers.

 Influenced by Photographers

I have been looking into the work of a still life/ observant photographer called Richard Billingham, he devised a very simplistic ‘photo book’ series called ‘Rays a Laugh’ by photographing the everyday lives of his alcoholic farther and obese mother. The reason why this could be seen as intriguing with viewers will be because it is documenting the squalid surroundings of where Richard once lived, these are photos inwhich most families would want to be kept hidden away, pictures that most would find disgusting and dirty. However the realism that Richard proposes within these images and unfortunately a lot of people around the world could relate their home life as once being similar.

The voyeurism and realism of these photos allow the eyes to feast upon; personality traits of the individuals are to be known by us through these documented images, we can tell that Ray is a clear dependent alcoholic who sits and wallows deep in his own negative thoughts and we have his mother an animal crazed, puzzle solving lover. Richard manage to artistically devise a photographic series of life in poverty and more importantly his own life surroundings. His style of photography had intrigued me and made me want to set out and observe my housemates to capture there good and bad moments of life. A few images below taken from ‘Rays a Laugh’

Rino Kawauchi

This is a Japanese photographer, who focuses on the objects of life including mother nature; and has the ability to capture those everyday random moments of life in such a delicate and poetic way. Her images from publications such as ‘Illuminance’  and ‘Utatane’  are sorted by juxtapositions even though some images can drift away from looking alike but Rinko manages to execute them in a format inwhich is makes sense and allows you to create your own story devised by her images.

An interveiw conducted by Foils editor Masakazu Takei, Rinko quotes ‘ what I am trying to do is capture the soul or aura of the subject rather than the subject itself… I guess that is the reason why people say that my lighting is unique.’ (Rinko Kawauchi 2011)
